Problems Caused by Excessive Water Lily Growth

Water lilies are a valuable feature of many UK lakes and ponds, but excessive growth can gradually cover open water and outcompete other aquatic plants.

  • Cover large areas of open water
  • Outcompete other aquatic plants
  • Restrict access for boats and watercraft
  • Reduce the diversity of aquatic habitats
  • Become increasingly difficult to manage as growth spreads
  • Restrict open water and water movement

How We Manage Water Lilies

Cutting & Root Removal

Water lily management is often about reducing excessive growth rather than removing the plants completely. Different approaches can be used depending on the extent of the growth and the balance of open water and habitat required at the site.

Water Lily Cutting

Mechanical cutting provides a fast and precise way to clear sections of excessive water lily growth. Truxor-mounted deep cutters can cut vegetation to depths of almost 2 metres, allowing large areas to be reopened while leaving selected areas of lilies untouched. Cutting provides an effective way to manage growth during the warmer months, but it is generally a temporary solution because the underlying root and rhizome systems remain in place.

Root & Rhizome Removal

Water lilies develop extensive root and rhizome systems beneath the water surface. Where excessive growth is becoming increasingly difficult to manage through cutting alone, these can be physically removed to provide a more lasting solution. Grip rakes and grab buckets can reach below the water surface and remove the underlying rhizome material. This approach is slower and more intensive than cutting, but can be appropriate where particular areas need to be cleared more permanently.

Maintaining a Healthy Balance

Water lilies can provide valuable habitat and are an important part of a healthy aquatic environment, so complete removal is rarely necessary. Our precision cutting equipment and the manoeuvrability of the Truxor allow selected areas to be cleared while leaving other growth untouched. Every watercourse has different requirements, and water lily control can often form part of wider maintenance works carried out during the same visit.
